You need Anmeldung for:

Without it, you cannot legally:

Timeline

Register within 2 weeks of moving to your new address. It’s better to do it immediately.

Required Documents

  1. Anmeldungsformular (registration form) - Available at Bürgeramt or online
  2. ID or Passport (original + copy)
  3. Wohnungsgeberbestätigung (landlord confirmation) - Signed by landlord
  4. Rental agreement (optional but helpful)

Step-by-Step Process

1. Get Landlord Confirmation

  • Ask landlord to sign Wohnungsgeberbestätigung
  • German name: “Bescheinigung des Vermieters”
  • Usually free or small fee

2. Book Bürgeramt Appointment

  • Visit city/district office website
  • Online appointment booking available
  • Appointments can be weeks ahead - book early!
  • Some locations allow walk-ins

3. Prepare Your Documents

  • Fill form with accurate info
  • Make copies of ID/passport
  • Have rental agreement ready

4. Attend Appointment

  • Bring all original documents
  • Arrive on time
  • Bring pen (blue ink)

5. Register & Receive Certificate

  • Staff fills in remaining info
  • You sign form
  • Receive Meldebescheinigung (registration certificate)
  • Usually immediate or mailed within days

After Registration
